Description
This work was created in 1999 in response to a commission by the Bochumer Symphoniker and was planned as a prelude to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. The soprano part is exactly tailored to the vocal type of soprano demanded by Beethoven in his symphony. A brief Hebrew text from the book of Exodus tells of the mercy and compassion of God. This early philanthropic approach is interpreted as an anticipation of Schiller’s ideals of humanity which are sung in Beethoven’s Ninth. The Adagio develops in a stream of variations in the form of a Passacaglia on a twelve-tone theme which following its emphatic climax leads to a peaceful conclusion. Stefan Heucke
