In 1946, Harald Genzmer came across the church hymn Das Jahr der Kirche [The Ecclesiastical Year], written by Gertrud von le Fort in 1934, and was in his own words 'moved by the beauty and profundity of these verses'. The tripartite cycle includes the two hymns for Advent and the Christmas hymn, and the sacred atmosphere of the poems is reflected in the music’s calm linear structure.
