Description

Franz Wilhelm Ferling (1796-1874), clarinetist, oboist, and composer, was in service to the Brunswick court from 1814 to 1859. Initially, from 1814 to 1816, he served as a clarinettist during the military campaigns but he was later appointed principal oboist in the Brunswick court theatre serving in that capacity until his retirement on 1 January 1859. He was not a prolific composer but his last set of studies are quite familiar to many students and teachers of oboe and saxophone. Clarinetists may also be familiar with Ferling's work as the 32 etudes for clarinet by Cyrille Rose (1830-1903) show a close similarity to Ferling's Op. 31. Apparently, Ferling also wrote a clarinet concerto; unfortunately, only fragments are extant. This edition of Ferling's Concerto for Two Oboes, Op. 14 is based on the only known manuscript which is catalogued as no. 1786 in the Strahov Collection, preserved in the National Literature Memorial in Prague, Czech Republic. The manuscript consists of a set of contemporary performing parts; no original score is known to exist. This attractive and unusual work will be of exceptional interest to oboists possessing a well-developed technique.
