Description
Cast in one movement, Concerto doppio is subdivided into several sections with a profoundly chamber music atmosphere. It begins in an unorthodox fashion: a quiet cadenza on both solo instruments accompanied by a single ostinato double bass is gradually intensified and works up to a dramatic climax leading into the fortissimo entry of the orchestral tutti. A second solo cadenza at the centre of the work introduces an Allegro passage culminating in a virtuoso Passacaglia. Towards the end of the work, the tempo progressively decelerates until the soloists and orchestra fade away in a huge diminuendo to pianissimo in the highest tessitura.
