Rodion Shchedrin: 90th Birthday on 16 December 2022

Mstislav Rostropovitch once described Rodion Shchedrin as ‘the king of the modern orchestra’, an individual who upheld the legacy and high art of instrumentation of his early advocate Dmitri Shostakovitch to a greater degree than any other subsequent composer from his Russian homeland. This is borne out by numerous compositions such as his Dialogues with Shostakovich, the Concerto cantabile and now also by the work Beethovens Heiligenstädter Testament which will receive its Austrian premiere on 2 November in a performance by the Deutsche Symphonie Orchester Berlin. Operas including Lolita, The Enchanted Wanderer, Der Linkshänder, A Christmas Tale and his popular ballet scores display Shchedrin’s unique flair for drama and dance. We wish our composer all the best, joy and happiness and above all good health!
