About Sabine Liebner

Sabine Liebner is held in high esteem throughout the world as an interpreter of New Music and regarded as one of the most important interpreters of the piano works by John Cage. Numerous radio, television, and CD recordings, as well as invitations to international festivals as a soloist and chamber musician document her extraordinary artistic career.

She has regularly been involved in projects with composers and artists such as Olga Neuwirth, Jörg Widmann, Franco Donatoni, and Christian Wolff, and has given a large number of world premieres and first performances of their works as well as concerts with compositions of Pauline Oliveros, Earle Brown, Cornelius Cardew, Tom Johnson. In addition, she draws up consistently extremely demanding and unusual concert programmes. At the Deutschlandfunk’s festival Forum Neuer Musik in 2011, Liebner performed the four books of John Cage’s “Etudes Australes” over the course of four successive evenings; this was only the fourth time the entire cycle had ever been played. In 2012, at the festivals Klangspuren Schwaz and Transart, she became the first performer ever to play a complete version of the piece within the space of 26 hours, with portions of the work performed in three different locations. Liebner has also played complete performances of John Cage’s “Music for Piano”, Galina Ustvolskaya’s “Piano Sonatas”, and Morton Feldman’s “Triadic Memories”.

Sabine Liebner has been awarded numerous prizes. In 2007, for example, she was chosen “German pianist recommended by the Goethe Institute” and received the “ffff TÉLÉRAMA”.

In recent years, Sabine Liebner has been especially interested in 20thcentury American composers. Her solo repertoire includes works by Earle Brown, Cornelius Cardew, Henry Cowell, George Crumb, Franco Donatoni, Tom Johnson, Mauricio Kagel, Helmut Lachenmann, Olivier Messiaen, Federico Mompou, Pauline Oliveros, Giacinto Scelsi, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Christian Wolff. She performs almost all compositions by John Cage and Morton Feldman, the complete piano works of Galina Ustvolskaya, as well as numerous compositions by other contemporary composers. WERGO published, among others, Sabine Liebner’s brilliant recording of John Cage’s “Etudes Australes” (WER 67402, 4 CDs, “Wire Rewind 2012”) as well as his “Solo for Piano” (WER 67682) and the number pieces “One⁷ | Four⁶” (WER 67972), early piano music by Morton Feldman (WER 67472, 2 CDs) and her highly acclaimed interpretation of piano works by Earle Brown, “Abstract Sound Objects” (WER 67452).
