Description
his concerto-like piece was written for the Amsterdam Student Chamber Orchestra (ASKO) at their request. The traditional concerto form is alluded to, both in the relationship of the solo instrument to the ‘tutti’ and with regard to overall structure - fast and slow musics.
However, the solo horn plays “within” the ensemble and the traditional three-movement layout is disrupted in favour of a continuous montage structure.
Orc appears as a character in Blake’s prophetic poem America where he epitomises the spirit of revolt, proclaiming Man’s liberty.
Orc disturbs the consciousness of his repressive society and is finally overcome but whilst in chains he still sings for the future. We live by such hopes, fragile though they be - I tried to suggest this in the epilogue of my piece with a bitter-sweet melody.
Orc was given its first performance in Holland with Stefan Blonk and ASKO conducted by Rutger van Leyden.
