Description

Based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen, this 35-minute fairy tale ballet is particularly popular in ballet programmes for children. Françaix and his choreographer Serge Lifar have given an ironic twist to the well-known story: When the emperor realises that he has been tricked by the tailors, it is not they but the ministers who are punished for failing to warn the emperor of the deception. Françaix employs spirited and rhythmic music to create subtle portraits of the individuals in the royal household and presents an abundance of comical situations, permitting a new version of Andersen’s fairy tale to come to life. The entrance of the tailors’ apprentices is accompanied by an effervescent theme that recurs in numerous variations, offering the dancers many opportunities to demonstrate their artistic skills. The emperor, in contrast, is introduced by a solemn, majestic theme.
