Description

One of the most successful concertos in the repertoire with over a hundred performances, this is one of Bertold Hummel’s most significant works. The extraordinary complexity of the score, which allows the solo percussionist to stand out from the rest of the orchestra, is visible in its four contrasting movements. The third movement, a lamentation, is an intimation of a homage to Shostakovich: elsewhere, the spectrum extends from a meditative tonal timbre to virtuoso figuration. The orchestra, although retaining a close link with the solo percussion part, is able to achieve a greater degree of independence within its symphonic development.
