Description
Franz feels magically attracted by the aloof Coppélia, daughter of the puppet maker Coppélius. Jealous, his fiancée Swanilda breaks into the workshop and dresses herself in Coppélia’s costume. Franz and the puppet maker appear, intending to finally bring Coppélia to life, and are amazed when the puppet actually begins to dance. Once Swanilda has revealed herself, the two lovers are reconciled and get married the very next day.
Delibes’ composition represented a step forward in the 1870s when most ballets consisted of a sequence of dance movements. With the aid of Nuitter’s libretto, the French composer succeeded in creating a ballet in which the music and the narrative are equally accomplished. Romantic intrigue, the appeal of the unknown, and the advancing threat of technological progress still resonate with today’s audiences. A truncated version of Coppélia lasting just an hour, arranged by Ludwig Hartmann, is also available (see below).
