Die Lauda gehört zur geistlichen Andachtsmusik, als strophisches Lied wurde sie von den sogenannten Laudesi-Bruderschaften zunftartig gepflegt. Samstags abends sang man in einer Zunftkirche oder -kapelle vor einem Muttergottesbild mehrere Lauden. Vom 13. bis 16. Jahrhundert reicht die Blütezeit dieser einfachen volksnahen Dichtung und Musik, die zunächst einstimmig, ab dem 15. Jahrhundert aber auch in mehrstimmigen Sätzen, für 2, 3, 4 und 5 Stimmen, vorliegt.
