Work of the Week – Fazıl Say: Mozart ve Mevlana
- By Christopher Peter
- 4 Nov 2024
Hand in Hand: This is the message of Mozart ve Mevlana by Fazıl Say. On November 6, 2024, this work will premiere at the Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre (KKL), performed by the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Michael Sanderling and joined by the Berlin Radio Choir.
In a world often marked by hatred, war, and suffering, Mozart ve Mevlana stands as Say’s response to cultural divisions. He blends the musical treasures of East and West to create a piece that resonates with a message of peace and humanity. The Lucerne Symphony Orchestra commissioned this work as a new composition.
Mozart ve Mevlana by Fazıl Say: A Musical Togetherness
Fazıl Say, who has composed numerous works for the stage, orchestra, and solo performance, frequently draws inspiration from the giants of music history, as with his Alla Turca Jazz. His latest work, Mozart ve Mevlana, written for soloists, choir, and orchestra, incorporates Mozart’s musical aesthetics. Say intertwines the sounds of Western classical music with Turkish-language texts by the 13th-century Persian poet Mevlana. Turkish folk instruments, solo passages, and powerful tutti sections contribute to a layered and immersive sound experience, beautifully merging centuries, regions, and cultural legacies. The piece symbolizes the possibility of friendship, compromise, and peace.
Mozart’s music is the music of humanity. Just as Mevlana’s words unite people beyond religion and faith. (Fazıl Say)
Following the premiere on November 6, Mozart ve Mevlana will be performed again in Lucerne on November 7 and at the Rosey Concert Hall in Rolle on November 10.
