Work of the Week – Elis Hallik: Phos
- By Christopher Peter
- 28 Oct 2024
The Symphony in One Movement: On November 1, 2024, Phos by Elis Hallik will have its world premiere at the AFEKT Festival, held at the Estonia Concert Hall in Tallinn. The Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Clement Power, will perform this work.
Phos was commissioned by AFEKT, Estonia’s largest contemporary music festival, marking an important first collaboration since Hallik joined the Schott catalogue in August 2024. Hallik’s compositions explore micro-events in sound, the relationships between silence and noise, and the mindful perception of the present moment.
Phos by Elis Hallik: An Experiment in Sound and Form
The title Phos originates from Ancient Greek, referring to both physical and metaphorical light. For Hallik, it symbolizes development, consciousness, and growth. Driven by endless curiosity, she created this symphony in one movement. The work’s four sections are unified by a single musical idea, giving the impression of one continuous, evolving movement. Phos is a remarkable example of innovative composition, exploring new sounds and forms.
Originally inspired by the 'Pillars of Creation' in the Eagle Nebula, where new stars form from cosmic dust, my symphony evolved into a symbol of inner light, knowledge, and growth. (Elis Hallik)
Following the premiere of Phos on November 1, 2024, Hallik’s orchestral work Aegis will have its French premiere on January 17, 2025, and its Spanish premiere on February 6, 2025. We look forward to more exciting works from Elis Hallik.
