Bruce Cole

Bruce Cole’s composition work has included commissions for the concert hall as well as scores for theatre, dance, television and film.

Bruce is currently Fellow in Community Music at the University of York, where he is responsible for a postgraduate programme for teachers and visiting artists that involves working in schools and with young offenders, and is also Chief Examiner for Edexcel GCE ‘A’ level music. He is the author of The Composer’s Handbook, co-author of Sound Matters and A Student’s Guide to Music Technology (all published by Schott Music), and his Pop Composer’s Handbook is due for publication in 2006. He is also currently working on a contemporary music resource book for the
classroom. Bruce’s workshops can be focused on composition or technology (or both!): from the creation of popular and contemporary music to use of Midi and sampling, his experience covers all areas of the curriculum.

Sessions will focus on strategies for developing compositions in both traditional and popular styles, with ideas for preparing KS3 students for the demands of GCSE (including the use of ICT).
