This year, the composer Kurt Hessenberg would have turned 100. Numerous concerts and events are going to take place in memory of this special musician and invite the audience to approach his choral oeuvre in a new manner.

Biography

Kurt Hessenberg was born in Frankfurt on the Main in 1908 and studied composition and piano at the Leipzig State Conservatoire. In 1933 he was became a teacher of theory at the Hoch Conservatoire in Frankfurt on the Main and was later appointed professor of composition at the Musikhochschule. He died on 17 June 1994.

Work

Apart from several concertos and chamber music works, his compositions include primarily sacred choral music, oratorios and organ compositions. Hessenberg is one of the most important representatives of Protestant church music in the 20th century. Hessenberg's musical language is characterized by counterpoint, rhythmic conciseness and discipline of form. Special emphasis is placed on a strong word-tone relationship – the sacred texts get their own characteristic dynamics and concise clearness by his tonal language.
