Gavin Bryars war vom kurzen melancholischen Gesang, den er 1971 einem Dokumentarfilm über Obdachlose entnommen hatte, so sehr fasziniert, dass er das Lied 180-mal wiederholte und mit einer ruhigen, harmonisch klingenden Orchestermusik unterlegte. Bryars’ Kompositionen vermitteln dem Hörer das Gefühl einer Bildbetrachtung. Es wird nämlich nur ein bestimmter Zustand beleuchtet, hier die religiösen Gefühle des Stadtstreichers. Daher ist diese Musik zur Untermalung im Film oder Ballett prädestiniert.
