Description
Night and Morning by John Caken is only available to download from www.sheetmusicdirect.com
These two poems are also known as Meeting at Night and Parting at Morning and were first published in 1845. In the first a man makes his way urgently across a grey and moonlit sea and over farmland to the house where his lover waits for him. As he leaves the following morning, we hear his "confession" (Browning's word when explaining the meaning of the second poem) that just as the sun's golden path is straight, so it is clear that feelings of rapture experienced the previous evening, so special and seemingly infinite at the time, are soon overtaken by the next day's journey. The coming ashore and the returning to the sea serve as a metaphor for the tidal rhythms of man's emotions, taking us from the sublime back to the reality of the everyday.
