Description
Choreographer David Dawson has long admired the music of Gavin Bryars. He first used Bryars music, String Quartet No. 3, in his ballet Reverence which he created for the Mariinsky Ballet in St Petersburg in 2005. Since then, Reverence has been performed by the Dresden Semperoper Ballet (where Dawson is resident choreographer) and Holland's Het Nationale Ballet. When Dawson was approached by the Royal Ballet of Flanders to create a new work to mark the company's 40th anniversary Bryars was the natural choice of composer. The resulting ballet, The Third Light, is for solo violin and twelve low strings and combines Bryars fluidity and sense of line with the grace and elegance of Dawson's choreography.
