Description

This chamber concerto is named after the Dumbarton Oaks estate of Robert Woods Bliss in Washington, DC, who commissioned it for his thirtieth wedding anniversary. Composed during Stravinsky‘s neo-classical period, it draws inspiration from the baroque concerto grosso form, in particular J.S. Bach‘s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 with each instrument functioning as both an ensemble member and soloist throughout the course of the piece. The work is contrapuntal in nature, the outer movements particularly so, while the second, which is relaxed and built on melodic fragments, provides relief from the complex and motivically-driven fugal writing that frames it.
