Description
The original version of this work was composed as an “occasional waltz” for the film München which was banned at short notice by Hitler and Goebbels. This second version dating from 1945 alludes to the destruction of the composer’s native city in air raids and thereby unites both the political and personal memories of Richard Strauss. This is particularly borne out by the trio added to this version “Minore – in memoriam”. The gentle flow of the waltz is repeatedly interrupted by loud and dissonant chords. The music is a reflection of the emotional interplay between remembrance and destruction.
