Samuel Dushkin, violinist, was born in the Polish town of Suwalki in December 1891 and moved to North America in 1903.
He studied with Leopold Auer in New York and was as student of Rémy and Fritz Kreisler in Paris. In 1918 he made his debut in Paris and London and in 1924 in New York. From 1931 to 1937 he undertook concert tours throughout Europe, America and the Middle East, often under the direction of Igor Stravinsky.
On the suggestion of Willy Strecker, Stravinsky's 'Violin Concerto in D major' was specially composed for Dushkin and premiered on the Berlin Radio in 1931.
Apart from his activities as a violinist, he composed études for violin and created numerous transcriptions for his instrument.
Schott Music has published a selection of his most beautiful works which appeared in 2008 under the title of 'Samuel Dushkin: Repertoire – The Best Pieces for Violin and Piano' (ED 20423).
