The multi-disciplinairy artist (composer/author/director) Nicholas Lens was born in Ypres, Belgium. His recordings are distributed by Sony/BMG International. Nicholas Lens lives in Brussels.
In recent years, Nicholas Lens has increasingly worked in the field of music and moving theatre (contemporary dance). Presently, he is composing his opera,
Slow Man, which is going to be premiered in September 2010 at La Monnaie, Operahouse, Brussels.
Slow Man is based on the novel by John M. Coetzee who is writing the libretto. The production will be written for two dancers, three singers (soprano, mezzo-soprano and baritone), a small female choir (15) and orchestra (47). The length will be around two hours and fifteen minutes.
Slow Man is resolutely breaking with Lens’ earlier artistic period as his music evolved into the direction of operatic music theatre and a much higher complexity in respect of rhythm and (a)tonality. Rather than closely following the original story,
Slow Man in its form of contemporary opera will evoke and accentuate the poetry of the inner reflections of three of the main characters.
