'Schwarz auf Weiss', written for the Ensemble Modern in 1995/96, is an experimental ground of composition which is inseparably bound up with the instrumental practice of the ensemble. Here, Heiner Goebbels sums up the experience he has gained in the seven years of his collaboration with the Ensemble… The interaction between composer and ensemble in 'Schwarz auf Weiss' has resulted in an enormous wealth of unmistakable forms, expressive gestures, combinations of music and language, tone colours and types of articulation. The DVD documents the performance of Heiner Goebbels' music theatre play 'Schwarz auf Weiss' for 18 musicians with the Ensemble Modern under the direction of Goebbels at the Munich Prinzregententheater on 1 July 2006, on the one hand, and the world premiere of his '… même soir…' for six percussionists with Percussions de Strasbourg under the direction of Goebbels at the Munich Muffathalle on 28 September 2000, on the other hand.

The concert recordings are complemented by detailed exclusive interviews of Max Nyffeler and Peider A. Defilla with Heiner Goebbels and musicians of the Ensemble Modern on issues of composing, interpreting and practically performing Goebbels' music theatre play.
