Description
IMA by Peter Eötvös is spatial music for a choir of solo singers and a large main choir. All choral parts are almost permanently divided into two sections; in addition, 12 solo singers form a chamber choir. The orchestra is reassembled, the string sections spread out over the whole place.
In his composition IMA, which means ’prayer’, Eötvös portrays the biblical act of creation by means of tonal and motivic development. The text of the composition is based on sound poems by Gerhard Rühm (’gebet’) and Sándor Weöres (’GENESIS I. 1-3’).
Both poems, one written in the form of a litany, the other transforming the subtext of the Bible into an invented ritual language of his own invention, explain the first phase of creation, the primordial state, the basic substance from which everything derives and to which everything returns.
