Description:

At first, Paul Hindemith had been sceptical about his publisher’s suggestion to turn the life story of the painter Mathis Gothart Nithart (ca. 1480-1528), known under the name of Matthias Gruenewald, into an opera. But he skilfully interwove the artist’s biography with the social and religious battles of the time of the Peasants’ War into his libretto. Mathis’ struggle for artistic autonomy in a politically charged present has often been interpreted as an expression of Hindemith’s own situation in National Socialist Germany.
While he worked on the opera Mathis der Maler, Hindemith was commissioned by Wilhelm Furtwängler and the Berlin Philharmonic Opera to write an orchestral work. He put three of the orchestral interludes together to form the Symphony ‘Mathis der Maler’. Like the seven tableaux of the dramatic work, these movements refer to engravings from Grünewald’s masterpiece, the Isenheim Altar: Engelkonzert (Angel Concert), Grablegung (Entombment), Versuchung des heiligen Antonius (Temptation of Saint Anthony).
