My Faraway Nanjing was composed to commemorate the 300,000 Chinese people who were killed by the Japanese army during the Nanjing Massacre in 1937. On 22 October 2005, it was premiered by China Philharmonic Orchestra in Beijing Concert Hall, with Zhang Yi as its conductor and Zhu Yibing the solo cellist. The work was performed many times throughout China; it was also performed during the International Music Festival in Hongkong and highly appreciated by the international media. Xiaogang Ye
