Description
Hindemith's opera "Neues vom Tage" [News of the Day] must be evaluated one of the most controversial main musical works of the 1920s. The work was definitely intended to provoke the usual opera audience, who expected an evening of comfortable, uplifting entertainment. Here they were given the dry language of business instead of operatic pathos, secretaries instead of nymphs, divorce instead of passionate love. The ridicule which "Neues vom Tage" so freely dishes out is especially effective musically because to a certain degree Hindemith is also making fun of himself.
Since the grand performance of John Dew "Neues vom Tage" has finally been re-discovered as a masterpiece of its time.
With these two CDs we have got the first complete release of the original version of 1929.
