Elmar Schrammel (b. 1976 in Freiburg im Breisgau) is currently living by the sea. After completing his studies with James Avery at the Musikhochschule Freiburg he continued his training at the Universität der Künste Berlin with Martin Hughes until 2003. In 2005 he received his diploma in concert performance with honors for New Music at the Hochschule für Musik Saar with Stefan Litwin and Yukiko Sugawara. He has participated in courses with Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Herbert Henck, and Christoph Keller. In 2001 he received a stipend from the Akademie Schloss Solitude Stuttgart, where he was involved in an exchange with the composers Mark Randall Osborn, Nadir Vassena, and Héctor Moro. In 2005–6 he received a stipend from the Ensemble Modern Frankfurt, during which the formation Breuer | Engler | Schrammel, a trio of flute, percussion, and piano focusing on the work of Morton Feldman, came together. He performs regularly at festivals and in series for contemporary music such as MaerzMusik in Berlin, musica viva in Munich, SWR Die Reihe, the Darmstädter Ferienkurse, the ISCM World New Music Festival both as a soloist and with ensembles such as SurPlus, the Ensemble Modern Akademie, adapter Berlin, and the Pellegrini-Quartett. One central work in his repertoire is Stockhausen’s epochal "Klavierstück X". In 2005 he performed in the premiere of Mathias Spahlinger’s "farben der frühe" for seven pianos.
