Helmschrott schrieb von 1984 bis 1994 einen Zyklus von 12 Werken für verschiedene Bläser oder Streicher und Orgel mit dem Titel „Sonata da Chiesa“. In ihrer Anlage sind Helmschrotts Sonaten konzertante Spielmusik, in ihrer Form verweisen sie auf die italienische Sonata da Chiesa des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts (von Banchieri, Gabrieli über Corelli zu Mozart) und damit auch auf ihren liturgischen Charakter in der ursprünglichen Bedeutung von „instrumentaler Musik im Gottesdienst“.
