Description

Commissioned by the town of Darmstadt in 1958 and premiered at the International summer Course for New Music, Coro di Didone is one of numerous vocal compositions by Luigi Nono. Coming after works such as Il Canto sospeso and Le Terra e la Compagna, it is characterised by, as he put it, his ‘[…] new vocal expressivity with a simultaneous relationship between the two formulating dimensions of a text: phonetics and semantics.’ The words are split into syllables, vowels and consonants and the text wanders through all voices of the choir. The percussion, comprising cymbal, tam tam and gong, makes rare appearances which particularly underlines its expressivity.
