Description
Rodion Shchedrin composed his ’concert parable’ for the legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. The work is based on a short story by Nikolai Leskov which Shchedrin subsequently formed into the opera The Enchanted Wanderer. The cello part is a confession in musical form made by the monk Golowan while the orchestral forces suggest aspects relating to the episodes of his eventful life as a serf, servant at court, coachman, actor, soldier, prisoner of the Tartars and finally as a monk.
