Description:

"When Allah's blessing touches a person it expresses itself through joyful dancing and singing." (the Prophet, quoted by Nizam ud-Din Auliya)
The Sufi music is a spiritual, very popular music, in which the adventures of the human soul on its way to God are being described in innumerable variations by poets, singers and holy men following this school of Islam. Concerning immediacy and personal presence the musical traditions of the Sufis, the derwishes and fakirs, can compete easily with the intensity for which the Soul music of the American continent is known.
Eight ensembles, mostly unknown in the West, represent Sufi traditions of the different regions of Pakistan. Classic music styles live side by side with spiritual Qawwali chants and ecstatic trance rituals. Apart from Qawwali music you can also hear on this CD Kafi-poetry, songs from the desert of Cholistan and Islamic Dhrupad.
A team of the Berlin House of World Cultures has visited the musicians who can be heard on this CD in Pakistan, recorded them there and invited them from 2-19 May 1997 for a festival in Berlin.
