Description
Inspired by the composer's encounter with the 'pievi' - early medieval rural churches - of Tuscany and in particular their elusive and enigmatic stone carvings, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies' cello sonata was written around the same time as his recent violin sonata, another Italian inspired work which plots a journey through Rome. The cello sonata is based on the Gregorian chant proper to Maundy Thursday which is heard at the beginning of the work. This simple opening later gives way to gradual changes of contour, 'demonic' tri-tones are introduced, intervals are altered and magic square workings transform the music further.
