Co-publishing agreement between Theodorakis' publisher Romanos and Schott Music

The Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, his publisher Romanos and the publishing house Schott Music, Mainz, have agreed on a comprehensive cooperation in publishing which commences with immediate effect. Romanos who publishes almost all works by Mikis Theodorakis will entrust the publishing house Schott Music and its international subsidiaries with all production, marketing and distribution tasks for his works on hire and on sale in future.

The two publishers who have been working together as distribution partners since 2001 will hold a joint copyright in the publications from now on. Schott Music will be the managing publisher for all sectors and countries including Greece as well as the contact for all media partners including orchestras, opera houses, music dealers and private customers. As a result, Schott Music is going to be in charge of almost the entire oeuvre by Mikis Theodorakis without any territorial limitation, including the world-famous music of the ballet Zorba the Greek.

Mikis Theodorakis, born on the isle of Chios in 1925, is considered to be the worldwide most famous and most successful Greek composer with a comprehensive oeuvre, including 1,000 songs which have been translated into numerous languages. In the first period of his musical career (1940-53) he wrote songs, oratorios, chamber music, ballets and symphonic works, including Symphony No. 1. The second, so-called Paris period (1954-59) during which he studied with Olivier Messiaen among others, comprises chamber music, ballets and symphonic works. The third period (1960-1980) is the period of his great political commitment and his turning to popular music, especially to songs. That period is followed by a fourth period (1981-1988) during which Theodorakis continues to compose song cycles but at the same time returns to symphonic music. During the fifth period since 1989, Thedorakis has composed his three operas (lyric tragedies): Medea, Electra and Antigone, as well as his most recent music-theatre work Lysistrata.
