Igor Stravinsky 125
2007 will see the 125th birthday of Igor Stravinsky – on 5 June according to the Julian calendar, on 17 June according to the Gregorian calendar.‘Composers combine notes, that’s all’
- Stravinsky once remarked ironically to his friend and assistant Robert Craft. One look at the sheer number and breadth of performances scheduled for May and June shows the effect and worldwide reception his music receives. During these two months, the ballet Firebirdwill be performed 30 times in 10 countries. In addition, major orchestras and festivals have programmed Stravinsky’s works: with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra celebrating the anniversary in March and April already, the number
of orchestras performing Stravinsky is increased by two further leading US orchestras, the New York Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony, as well as by the London Symphony Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. The festivals featuring Stravinsky during these months include the Prague Spring Festival, the Vienna Festival, the Rheingau Music Festival as well as the festival in Aspen, Colorado and the Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox, Massachusetts.
