World Première of Chaya Czernowin's Maim at MaerzMusik Festival
On 17 March 2007, the festival MaerzMusik in Berlin presents the world première of Chaya Czernowin’s large-scale orchestral cycle in its final complete version. The Konzerthausorchester Berlin is directed by Johannes Kalitzke who also conducted Chernowin’s recent stage work Zaïde / Adama at the Salzburg Festival. They will be joined on stage by five soloists: tubax, sopranino oboe, electric guitar, harpsichord and viola. Maim (Hebr. ‘water’) springs from the thought that only a small part of human communication lies in words. Most comes through gestures, timbre, tempo, and the world’s great problems result from the overvaluation of words. Influenced by the huge media coverage of the Middle East, Chaya Czernowin has composed a sensitive piece which sounds out the possibilities of music against the background of a newly understood communication.
