Andrew Norman Named Composer-in-Residence at BMOP and LACO

Andrew Norman has been named Composer-in-Residence at both the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) and Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO). BMOP has named Norman their 2011-2013 Music Alive Composer-in-Residence. The residency will culminate with a large-scale symphonic commission scheduled for premiere in 2013. In addition, BMOP will record several of Norman's works for a prospective BMOP/sound album. Building on his past successful residences, the composer will engage the Boston community by steering BMOP's educational outreach programs, Club Concerts series, and composer collective The Score Board. BMOP presents the US premiere of the composer's concerto for theremin and orchestra, Air, conducted by Gil Rose, on January 27.

The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra announced this week that Norman will be their Composer-in-Residence for three years beginning in July, 2012. As composer-in-residence, in addition to several performances of his existing music on LACO's concert series, Norman will compose a new work commissioned through LACO’s innovative Sound Investment initiative, a program that offers investor members the rare opportunity to create a legacy in music and to observe first-hand the development of a new work from the composer’s earliest ideas to the finished composition. Additionally, Norman serves as an advisor to Music Director Jeffrey Kahane regarding promising emerging composers and artists, and leads outreach initiatives to selected area high-school and college composition classes.

Audiences in London and Liverpool are introduced to the music of Andrew Norman in the early days of the New Year. The BBC Symphony Orchestra, under Thomas Dausgaard, performs the UK premiere of Norman’s Unstuck on January 19 at the Barbican, and Try receives its UK premiere on January 25 with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic under Clark Rundell. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic co-commissioned Try with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, who gave the world premiere performance on their Green Umbrella series last May. These concerts mark the first major performances of Andrew Norman's music in the UK.

In February, Pyramid Scheme, a collaborative work composed by Andrew Norman, Christopher Cerrone, Robert Honstein and Jacob Cooper, premieres with the Ensemble ACJW at Skidmore College followed by the work’s Carnegie Hall premiere on February 14. All composers are members of the Brooklyn-based composer collective Sleeping Giant.
