Work of the Week - Alexander Goehr: When Adam Fell

To celebrate Alexander Goehr’s 80th birthday year, BBC Radio 3 have commissioned a new orchestral work which will be premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra on 13th January 2012 at Barbican Hall in London. Oliver Knussen, to whom the work is dedicated, will conduct the work.
When Adam Fell takes its title from the Chorale "Durch Adam’s Fall ist alles Verderbt" by J. S. Bach and Goehr bases his new composition on the extraordinary chromatic bass made from a series of falling sixths and sevenths separated by silences which Bach invented for his setting. Goehr mentions that it was a favourite of Oliver Messiaen who performed it in his classes (which Goehr attended) and describes it as "unique in its effect".
