Work of the Week - Igor Stravinsky: Scènes de Ballet

Inspiring choreography combined with Stravinsky’s beautiful music makes every performance of Scènes de Ballet an exciting event. On Thursday 22nd December 2011 the Nationaltheatre Munich will present the work as part of a programme titled 'Steps & Times' with the Bayerisches Staatsballett dancing Frederick Ashton’s legendary choreography.
First performed with Ashton's choreography in 1947 by the Royal Ballet at London’s Royal Opera House, the dancer’s movements follow geometric shapes allowing the work to be viewed equally well from any point in the audience. This idea is also absorbed into the costumes and glittering jewellery which André Beaurepaire, who was influenced by Picasso, designed for the 1947 performance.
It is a reserved, uncompromising beauty, which says: I am here, I am beautiful, but I do not make the least effort to please you. Frederick Ashton
Scènes de Ballet can also be seen at the Nationaltheatre Munich on 23rd and 28th December 2011 as well as six further performances throughout the 2011/12 season.
