Huw Watkins Wins British Composer Award
Schott Music is very proud to announce that Huw Watkins has won the vocal category at the 2011 British Composer Awards for his work Five Larkin Songs. The short song cycle was commissioned by Finzi Friends for the 2010 Weekend of English Song and first performed by soprano Carolyn Sampson and the composer at the piano.
Five Larkin Songs was enthusiastically received by both the audience and press at its world premiere and has since been performed at the Saintes Festival (French premiere) and more recently at Presteigne Festival.
“Watkins found wise and witty musical language to incarnate Larkin’s every mood - and Carolyn Sampson enjoyed the athletic voice writing to the full. This is a major contribution to the song repertoire, and should be pounced upon and programmed widely.” Hilary Finch (The Times)
An Edition Schott publication is due to be released in spring 2012.
