The term ’Circulus vitiosus’ or vicious circle is used to describe a system in which certain factors become intensified and aggravate each other. Within the field of social science, the ’circulus vitiosus’ is also defined as a ’spiral with a downward tendency’ (such as the spiral of silence, the debt trap or the poverty spiral). In this composition for oboe and harpsichord (which can also be performed with piano or organ), the ’circulus’ defines a fast whirling circular motion in rondo form which incorporates certain musicological diabolic features such as the tritone (diabolus in musica), sliding chromaticism and ’Devil’s trills’. The soloist is then free to extend his own diabolesque fantasies further in a cadenza (ad lib.). Enjott Schneider
