Ian Kemp tribute

We are very sad to learn of the death of our colleague and friend, Ian Kemp.

Ian Kemp, musicologist and biographer, died on 16 September 2011. A graduate of Cambridge University, he was on the editorial staff of Schott Music in the early 60s before a distinguished academic career that took him to Aberdeen, back to Cambridge (St John’s College), then as Professor to Leeds (1977-81) and finally Manchester (1981-91). His blend of wisdom, empathy, wit and immense knowledge left its mark on countless individuals and on the ethos of all the institutions for which he worked.

While at Schotts he formed enduring friendships with Alexander Goehr, Peter Maxwell Davies and Michael Tippett, which led to an edited symposium (1965) and to a still definitive life-and-works study (Eulenburg, 1984). He also published profound studies of Hindemith, Berlioz and Weill, as well as editions of their works. He is survived by his second wife, conductor Sian Edwards, their son Finn, and one son and four daughters from his first marriage.
