Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins in New Productions at Castleton and Central City Opera

Following the New York City Ballet’s new production of The Seven Deadly Sins in May, Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s ballet chanté will enjoy two more new stage productions this summer, this time on opera stages.

The Seven Deadly Sins will be presented at the Castleton Festival in Virginia on July 8, 15, and 23, in a production conducted by Levi Hammer and directed by William Kerley, with Kate Mangiameli as Anna I. Appearing on a double-bill with Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortileges, the Sins will be performed in English using the W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman translation.

Also in July, The Seven Deadly Sins (Die sieben Todsünden) will be performed in the original German at Central City Opera in Colorado, conducted by John Baril, directed by Ken Cazan, and featuring 2011 Lotte Lenya Competition finalist Peabody Southwell as Anna I. Central City’s production is part of a menu of three one-acts (with Gianni Schicchi and The Breasts of Tiresias) performed in rotating repertory from July 9 through August 5.
