Two pianos and percussion – at first glance possibly an exotic combination, but a whole series of wellknown arrangements of even more well-known compositions have been created for this instrumentation, which lends itself particularly well to intensely rhythmic 20th Century works with folk elements such as Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana and Igor Strawinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps.

And it is these works which feature in the same programme as the World Première of Fazil Say’s Variationen at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. Say’s new work is an ideal companion piece for these modern classics, with its distinctive rhythms over an ascending bass line, its driving power and reminiscences of Arabian folk music.
