Work of the Week - Christian Jost: Der Zaubergarten

A contemporary music world premiere performed by an early music ensemble? To experience this uncommon event you’ll have to attend the Audi Summer Concerts in Ingolstadt, Germany. The festival has commissioned Christian Jost to write a new piece for the Academy for Early Music Berlin. The resulting concertino for violin and chamber orchestra, Der Zaubergarten (The Magic Garden), will be premiered on 14 July under the baton of Bernhard Forck.

The atmospheric structure of the four movements, awakened - enchanted - threatened - vanished, are characterised by the solo violin (in a similar manner to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons) and pass through different stages within the idiom of ’early music’, allowing them to be heard through the prism of our time as fresh-faced and ’enchanted’. In this work, the leader of the orchestra or a guest soloist is able to take a stroll along the paths of the ’Enchanted Garden’, determining his progress or merely drifting along and becoming involved in the action.
