Work of the Week - Gerald Barry: Feldman's Sixpenny Editions

Gerald Barry’s new work Feldman’s Sixpenny Editions will receive its world premiere in London this week on 10th March at the Queen Elizabeth Hall performed by the London Sinfonietta conducted by Thomas Adès. The work was co-commissioned by the London Sinfonietta and The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the first performance will be followed by the North American premiere in April 2012 performed by the St Paul Chamber Orchestra under Thomas Zehetmair.
The composer gives us an introduction to the work in his programme note:
Feldmans was a music shop in London in the early 20th century. They sold collections of popular music for playing at home, and some of these were called Feldman’s Sixpenny Editions. Collections like these were among my first feverish encounters with music as a boy. I fell in love with pieces like Martial Steps and The dog barks, the caravan passes on. I entered into them completely, becoming one not only with the music, but with the paper they were printed on, and the advertisements on the back. I pored over these, laying my face on them, waiting for signs of my future
The premiere of Gerald Barry’s Feldman’s Sixpenny Editions takes place at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall on 10th March 2011 and the composer’s new opera, The Importance of Being Earnest , will receive its first performance from the Los Angeles Philharmonic on 7th April 2011.
