Joseph Schwantner Performed Across America; Choreographed in Canada

Seven orchestras and ensembles perform works by Joseph Schwantner this month, including enduring classics such as his Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra, Sparrows, and New Morning for the World. On March 8, his Concerto for Percussion and Wind Ensemble is featured at California State University East Bay in Hayward, CA; the same work is performed one day earlier by the Southern Illinois University Wind Ensemble in Carbondale, IL, featuring Dame Evelyn Glennie as the soloist.

In Vancouver, Schwantner’s Music of Amber is choreographed by Kokoro Dance with accompaniment by members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in a performance on March 18 as part of the Vancouver International Dance Festival.

Sparrows, Schwantner’s work for soprano and chamber orchestra with text by Japanese poet Kobayashi Issa, is performed twice in March: on March 2 at Connecticut's University of Hartford and on March 29 at the University of Texas, Austin.

Further performances include: New Morning for the World, Schwantner’s heartfelt orchestral setting of the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. which draws from a variety of his speeches, writings and addresses, by the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony on March 12; and Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra is performed by the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra on March 26.
