The chamber music genre wind quintet dates back to around the time of the invention of the clarinet, its youngest element. Unlike other older genres such as the string quartet, the wind quintet only really came into its own during the twentieth century. Fazil Say, composer in residence at the Konzerthaus Berlin, has selected this instrumentation for his first work written exclusively for wind instruments. In this work, he has conjured up the image of a convivial gathering of bearded men round the table in his native Turkey and has transformed their lively discussion and pensive thoughts into notes – a representation of five rational people conversing in the best sense of chamber music tradition.
