The Chamber Music Festival held in Tucson/Arizona in the winter with an average daytime temperature of around 23°C is one of the hottest spots for ambitious chamber music. This was where Olli Mustonen’s Nonetto II received its first performance two years ago; the reactions were so euphoric that the composer was commissioned to produce a new work in 2011. Mustonen deviates from the customary piano quartet instrumentation with an oboe instead of a cello. The oboe part is performed by Alan Vogel – the only wind player among this year’s festival participants.
