Toshio Hosokawa’s Woven Dreams Given its US Premiere by The Cleveland Orchestra

On January 20, 21, and 22 The Cleveland Orchestra performs the US premiere of Woven Dreams by Toshio Hosokawa, a work co-commissioned by the Lucerne Festival, the Roche Corporation, and Carnegie Hall. Known as the Roche Commissions, these works are commissioned annually in partnership with The Cleveland Orchestra, and have been awarded to George Benjamin, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Chen Yi, among others. Toshio Hosokawa’s Woven Dreams was premiered by The Cleveland Orchestra in August, 2010 at the Lucerne Festival, and now comes to Cleveland’s Severance Hall.

Hosokawa writes about this work:

I once had a dream that I was in my mother’s womb. In the dream, I experienced these things: the joy of being in the warm womb, pressure and obsession that I must be born before long, and the joy of coming into the world through the suffering and pain of the process of birth. These are deep experiences that will stay in my mind for all time [and which] I have tried to recreate in music. In this work there are many influences from the musical language of "Gagaku", the ancient Japanese court music that is the womb of my music.
